Ming’s of Honolulu was the great Hawaiian jeweler — founded in 1940, beloved for pairing carved jade with gold in a style all its own — and this bangle is one of its most coveted forms. A single band of translucent, mottled green jade, mounted in solid 14K yellow gold, it carries the incredible natural markings that make fine jade prized above almost any stone in Asia: no two patterns alike, the color shifting green as light passes through it. Jade has meant good fortune and protection for thousands of years across the Pacific and Asia, and a bangle is the most personal way to wear it — slipped on and rarely removed. It weighs a substantial 33 grams, is signed with the Ming’s name and 14K in two places, and survives in excellent condition. From a house that closed its doors in 1999, this is Hawaii’s finest, made to last generations.
