Japanese Shakudō Samurai Menuki Bracelet

Ten small worlds, each one lifted from the hilt of a samurai sword. These are menuki — the ornaments a swordsman’s palm once closed around — worked in shakudō, the old Japanese alloy of silver, copper, and gold that ages to a near-black bronze. Here ten of them, taken from real blades, are set on sterling and linked into a single bracelet: a dragon and its foo-dog mate, a bird, a serpent mid-slither, a wolf standing over its kill, and — at the clasp — a solitary figure lying back to play an instrument, quiet at the end of all that ferocity. No two are alike, because no two were ever meant for the wrist at all. This is not jewelry made to look like history. It is history, disarmed and made wearable — the warrior’s grip turned to ornament.
