On this piece

An Art Deco clamshell in vermeil over sterling, set with blue rhinestone. This is Joseph Mazer working in the 1940s, when wartime metal restrictions sent the good houses to silver and the results were often the best work they ever did. The form is fully dimensional and the warm gold wash sets off the blue exactly as intended. It is signed on the reverse with the Mazer mark, though the M and A have worn away over time; the partial Z, E and R remain clearly visible above STERLING, which is true to the mark the house used on its sterling pieces. It measures 2.75 inches wide by 2 7/8 inches tall. Excellent vintage condition.
